The American War of Independence - Hand Painted

Depicting the opposing sides of the American War of Independence. For the Americans, the King is represented by General George Washington, the Queen by Betsy Ross, the Bishops by Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson, the Knights by General, the Marquis Lafayette and Benedict Arnold, the Castles by the Independence Hall, Philadelphia and the Pawns by a Private of the Third New Jersey Regiment, know as the ‘Jersey Blues’. For the British Side, the King is represented by George III, the Queen by Charlotte, wife of George III, The Bishops by Fredrick Lord North, Prime Minister to George III, and General Sir William Howe, The Knights by General Charles, Earl Cornwallis and Benedict Arnold, The Castles by Tower of London and the Pawns by a Private of the Grenadier Company of the Coldstream Guards.

Hand Painted Lord of the Rings Chess Pieces

This especially commissioned set, by renowned English sculptor Dennis Fairweather, has brought to life some of Tolkien's wonderful characters. Each side has been sculptured separately resulting in eighteen different models. Columbus - Hand Painted

Depicting characters who were involved in the first voyage in 1492, and some of the native Americans Columbus and his successors were to meet. Representing the European side: Columbus is the king, and Isabella of Castile the queen. Amerigo Vespucci and Fray Diego de Deza are the bishops, Martin Alonso Pinzon and Vincente Danez Pinzon of Palos are the two knights with the Santa Maria as the Castles and Spanish Seamen as pawns. On the American side : Emperor Montezuma II of the Aztecs is the king, and an Inca Sun Virgin the queen. For the bishops there is a Mayan Priest and an Aztec High Priest. The knights are represented by an Inca Warrior and a Chief from the Southeastern Indians. The castles are the Temple of Kukulcan at Chichen Itza and the pawns are Carib Indians. Height of king 6 1/2" approx.

The Civil War - Hand Painted

Depicting the opposing sides of the American Civil War. For the north, the King is represented by Abraham Lincoln, the Queen by Mary Todd Lincoln, the Bishop by Ulysses S Grant and William T Sherman, the Knights by Cavalry Officers, the Castles by the Capitol Washington and the Pawns by Infantymen. For the south the King is represented by the Jefferson Davis, the Queen by Varina Howell Davis, the Bishops by Robert E Lee and Stonewall Jackson, the Knight by Cavalry Officers, the Castles by State Capital Virginia and the Pawns by Infantrymen. Height of the King is 7"

The Battle of Waterloo

Depicting the British against the French. On the British side the King is the Duke of Wellington with the Duchess of Richmond as Queen. The Bishop is a Drummer of the Foot Guards, the Knight a trooper of the Scots Greys and the Pawns are infantrymen of the Foot Guards. On the French side Napoleon Bonaparte is King with Empress Josephine as Queen. The Bishop is a Drummer of the Imperial Guard, the Knight a trooper of the Carbiniers and the Pawns infantrymen of the Imperial Guard. Height of the King 5" approx.

The Dickens Pieces

Representing the Good Side: Mr Pickwick is the king, Betsy Trottwood is the Queen, the bishops are Sydney Carton and Tom Pinch, the knights are Dick Swivler and Mr Boffin. The castles are cosy country cottages and the pawns are Young Gentlemen. Representing the Bad Side: Fagan is the king and Miss Haversham the queen. The Bishops are scrooge and Mr Squeers. The knights are Mr Carker and Mr Bounderby. The castles are Old London Warehouses and the Pawns are Poor Street urchins.

Sherlock Holmes - Hand Painted

Sherlock Holmes against his old rival Professor Moriarty as the two kings. Moriarty is supported by Irene Adler as the queen, Colonel Moran the bishops, the hounds of the Baskervilles the knights, Dr. Roylot the castles and the pawns are thugs. Holmes has Mrs Hudson as queen, Dr. Watson as bishops, Wiggins and Toby as knights, Inspector Lestrade as castles and the pawns are policemen. Height of the king is 5 1/2" approx.

Alice in Wonderland - Hand Painted

A set depicting characters from the story: the kings are represented as in the story. The queens are represented by Alice. The bishops by the Mad Hatter, the knights by the White Knight of the story. The rooks are represented by Tweedle Dum, and the pawns by the Rabbit. The height of the king is 3 1/4" approx.

Golfers - Hand Painted

This specially commissioned set by British Sculptor, Peter Calvesbert is a whimsical portrayal of old golfers against new. Although no particular characters are represented we have used St. Andrews as Castle for the old side, and Turnbury Lighthouse for the new. The pawns are represented by old and new golf bags. The remaining characters can be distinguished by the form of dress, the old side in their plus-fours and tweeds and the new with bright colors and baseball hats. The height of the king is 5" approx.

Camelot chess set - Hand Painted

Based on the legend of King Arthur, depicting King Arthur and Queen Guinevere as kings and queens. Height of the king 5 1/2 “ approx.

Jazz - Hand Painted

This set creates a wonderful scene capturing the atmosphere of New Orleans. Pieces" The King & Queen are singers, bishops are with clarinets, Knights are "on drums", the Rooks are playing the double bass and the Pawns form the saxophone section. The height of the King is approx 5 1/2".

Henry VIII

This classical set depicts the richness of the court with the touches of gold and silver applied during the hand painting. Pieces: King Henry as the king, his first of six wives Katherine of Aragon as the Queen, Archbishop Thomas Crammer and the first Archbishop of Canterbury are the bishops. Charles Brandon, Duke of Norfolk is married to Henry's sister Mary, dowager Queen of France as the knights. The Rooks are part of the tower of London and Pawns show the spoils of the monasteries, and the martyrdom of the Catholic Church. The height of the King is approximately 5".

Depicting the Mexicans against the Americans. On the Mexican side Santa Anna is the King with a Mexican lady as Queens. On the American side Jim Bowie is the King with his lady as Queen. Davy Crocket is the Bishop. Height is King 7”. Available in natural resin finish.

Lewis Carroll

These pieces were inspired by Tenniel's illustrations of Lewis Carroll's characters of Alice. The kings are queens are taken directly from Tenniel's illustrations as in the story. The bishops are represented by Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee, the knights by the walrus and the unicorn, the rooks by the lion and the carpenter and the pawns by the rabbit. Height of the king is 5 1/2" approx. The colors of the pieces are ivory and red.

The Viking Raiders

Set in the period of 100AD, these pieces depict the Vikings against the Saxons. Height of the king is 5" approx.

This chess set is based on a selection of world famous sculptures. The kings are represented by Michelangelo's David. The queens are represented by a Greek goddess. The New York Chess Pieces

The New York Chess Set is one of our new chess sets from British chess game maker SIAB. A wonderful collectors item, the chess pieces were commissioned in February 2001 and first shown at the New York Gift Fair in August. This set was made a limited commemorative set after the tragic attacks on September 11. For every set sold $5 will be contributed to the fund for families affected. The King (Empire State Building) is 4" high. Makes a nice set with our Large White Polish Chess Board.
